At Bethel, we are constantly thinking of new ways to raise money for the benefit of the destitute. The Giggle Charity Show grew out of one such brainstorming session between one of our members, the comedy genius Mr Allan Perera and our founder Dato’ Jerald Gomez. This joint event involved hosting a comedy show for one night only, where the proceeds would be used to support BCC’s (Bethel Community Centre) charitable projects.
This charity show was scheduled for 4 July 2015 at the Theatre KUASH at Pusat Kreatif Kanak-Kanak, TTDI which can seat up to 300 people. Tickets were priced at RM100 and RM150. To promote the event, Dato’ Jerald Gomez and Datin Yvonne Raj gave a press interview with the Malay Mail to explain the history and mission of Bethel Community Centre whilst promoting the charity show. We also invited Cecil Rajendra to read poetry for the guest in attendance. Cecil is a renowned poet who has written volumes of poetry and has read his works all around the world. He was the first recipient of the Malaysian Lifetime Humanitarian Award for his pioneering legal aid work and inspirational poetry and in 2005 he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature which is in itself testimony to his talent. We were truly privileged to have him.
The Bethel team sold out all the tickets allocated to us. On the night of the comedy event we also sold food, drinks, handmade cards and accessories.
The night was a success with many people learning for the first time about the work that Bethel Community Centre is doing and the many avenues to partner with us, while at the same time being provoked by Cecil’s readings and thoroughly entertained by the many faces and musical talents of Allan and his team who brought us all down memory lane. Many people came up to say how much they enjoyed the night.
We want to say Thank You to all those who purchased or donated tickets for this event and to all the volunteers who ensured that the event ran smoothly.
At Bethel, we share the sentiments of the late Nelson Mandela who sad “overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.”
